Sooky
We had been casually talking about getting a second dog for a while, but didn't want to rush out and adopt. I think Nick and I both believed that we'd know when we met the right dog. As I had mentioned, I was at the mall during the last ICHS bake sale and had a chance to stop at the table to visit with the pets and chat with the volunteers. There was a beagle there that I wanted to see again, and Nick and I went to the shelter the next day so that we could meet her.
When we went back to the small dog/puppy room, though, we were both taken with a Blue Heeler-Husky mix puppy. She lay in her cage, shaking, and though she wouldn't look us in the eyes, she didn't move away, either. While you feel for all of the animals you meet at the shelter, there's an indescribable connection that happens when you meet the animal that is meant to join your family.
Within hours of arriving home, we started to see a completely different puppy emerge. There was no more shaking, only cuddles and kisses and boundless energy. Sooky has been with us for just a little over a month now, and she has become an outgoing, adventurous, and affectionate part of our family. Though only half her size, she's had no troubles keeping up with our 2-year-old hound, Arrow, as they race around the yard and bond over a love of Frisbees and snow! Our two cats, Stella and Mercy, though a little slower to warm up to the new addition, are now treating her as though she's been with us forever (which means mostly with disdain, but occasionally they'll let her play with them). :)
We're so happy that we were able to adopt Sooky and that she had the shelter staff and volunteers to take such good care of her until she could come home. You do amazing work there, Charlotte, and I know how thankless it can sometimes be. But, I hope all of you know what a difference it makes and that you receive frequent reminders of it!

| Eddie Eddie is a special boy who found himself at the shelter, through no fault of his own. He is such a smart and sensitive boy and the stress of losing his home was quite evident, as you might imagine, particularly for a 10 year old. He was fearful of his surroundings and all of the strange people and dogs, and sometimes barked until he was nearly hoarse, due to his stress. Fortunately for Eddie he found himself a foster home where he could relax a bit. Then, he was truly blessed when he was adopted into a loving family. A very happy event for all involved. They stated that “This Christmas was even more meaningful with the addition of Eddie…such an intelligent, loving boy who has brought such joy into our lives. Thank you for giving Eddie such good care until he found his way into our hearts. A big thanks to all the staff and volunteers at ICHS for all their love and dedication towards all the animals. They certainly are special people.” A big WOOF and belly rub to you, Eddie! You are a real trooper and one very lucky dog! Our prayers were answered and we are very grateful that you have found love with your new, forever family. With much love and affection from your temporary foster Mom. | Back To Top |
Frodo I took him to the VET last Friday just to get him checked over. They estimate he is actually about 11-12 years old. He had a three in one heart worm check (lime disease and something else) and a fecal done. He came back neg for everything. I had a small tumor removed from his neck and his anal glands drained which were pretty bad from the VET said.....YUK!! LOL He is also on a puppy food and his Nitro to help him gain some weight. I also started him on heart guard because we will be going down to VA allot and camping. The groomer said he did really well, said he was probably used to being groomed at one time. I have got to hear his whining bark as he has let the neighbors know he lives there now. He does not like to be alone so he comes to work with me and gets along great with all the people in the office. I won't let him have people food so they have all brought in treats on their desk so he is getting spoiled. When you called we actually were just sitting here taking a break and he was up on my lap sleeping. He is like a shadow, doesn't let me to far out of his site...lolThanks for allowing me to adopt him, he is going to have a good life. RM | Back To Top | Lennord, Percy, and Isabel We adopted Lennord (black and white tuxedo, on right) (and his friend Percy- formerly Lil Bit) in September 2005, and he is doing really well! He developed some urinary issues over the winter and can only have special food now, but as much as Lenny loves to eat, he doesn't even care! He loves cat nip and his naps on our bed! He hates loud noises though.Percy (not pictured) passed away in February due to liver failure, but we gave him a good home for his last 5 months. We adopted Isabel (tiger striped, on left, formerly known as taco) in February 2006. She and Lennord weren't too sure about each other at first, but now get along well. They run and play constantly. Isabel is a cuddly kitty cat who just loves attention! I am thankful for the privilege of adopting all of them and think that everyone at the shelter does a wonderful job! | Back To Top | FENDI Hi—thanks to everyone at the shelter that took such good care of me. Mommy said that I had to tell her what to write so that I could get my story posted on the website. I came to the shelter as a stray in September 2005, and my mommy took me home in January 2006. She tells me that she saw my picture on the website and could not stop thinking about me. It was meant to be!The first couple weeks at my new home I had to learn some manners. I thought it was fun to roll my Pomeranian brothers and sister down the hill in the yard, and I wanted to sit on the furniture all the time. Mom had to explain that wasn’t polite doggie etiquette. Pretty soon I learned how to do some tricks and be gentle with the Poms. Now we all get along great, and I love to play with them. I even take it upon myself to wash their faces with my tongue when they get dirty. My mommy saw how fast I ran around the yard and decided to enroll me in agility class. I LOVE IT!! Mom says I am pretty good too. The tunnel is my favorite, although last week I finally mastered the weave poles. I like the one-on-one time I get to spend with mom. Monday night is OUR night. Thank you for letting mom bring me home. I have a great life and a family that loves me. | Back To Top | LEO He is a special husky indeed. He is NOT blind, but is deaf in one hear, and some hearing loss in the other. We love him so much and I am so glad that we brought him into our family. He still needs surgery for some fatty cysts (because they are huge) and his teeth are in pretty bad shape.I have owned two huskies in my lifetime and he is helping replace Trinket whom had to be put to sleep two years ago this week. He had his surgery on Aug 9th to have his fatty cysts removed and his teeth cleaned. He had to stay overnight because he had a-lot larger incision than they thought he would. He just got sutures removed on Tuesday the 22nd. The vets said he looks good and recovered quite well. | Back To Top | Ana In September 2006, we adopted a dog from your shelter. We had considered getting a dog for quite some time and wanted a small, mature one. Ana (formerly known as Fluffy) appeared at our daughter’s home one evening (with her temporary foster parent) and captured our hearts. Less than 20 pounds and 1-1/2 to 3 years old – perfect! The concern that she might not be gentle enough with our four grandchildren was answered the evening we first met her. That weekend we went shopping and had such fun getting her all the things she would need. Our friends laughed when they saw the HUGE bag of dog food we purchased for such a small dog. We even bought her a soft baby blanket which she sleeps on every night. Ana met the rest of our family from out of town this past weekend – including two nice, very large dogs. They even brought her presents! We were so proud of her behavior, as she shared us with her new, extended family. We feel blessed to have this sweet little dog in our lives and are grateful for the love and compassion of the shelter workers, volunteers, and fosters who took care of our precious Ana in her time of need. Thank you all for the love and care that each of you give to the animals who come to your shelter. May God bless you. | Back To Top | Jax My husband and I fell in love with Jax’s profile online. I called to see if we could arrange to see him only to be told he was adopted. However, it must have been meant to be because I checked back the next day to see the website updated and Jax still available. In calling a second time, I found that he had been transferred to a foster home. Several phone calls and a visit later we had filled out the paperwork for this lovable lab mix. He has been the perfect addition to our family. Though he is 9 years old, you would never know it. Our vet can’t believe how much energy this guy has. All he needed was a little love and it’s gone a long way. He walks around the house with a smile on his face. We love Jax and the joy he has brought to our life. Our other dog just loves having a companion to pal around with in the house and out on walks. You would think that they were brother and sister all their lives. Thanks to all of you at the shelter for the opportunity of bringing such a special dog into our life. Special thanks to Cindy for all you caring and help in making sure that this special boy got a good home. We wouldn’t know what to do without him. | Back To Top | Jake Hi, I am Jake, I had an appointment to be destroyed on April 10 2007 at 5:00 PM. I want to share my story with you. I came to the Indiana County Humane Society November, 26 2006, I am a big dog who once weighed about 70 lbs at the young age of 18 months. I was lost and had bruises on both sides of my ribs. It was a traumatic time, I choose not to recall much. I recall being taken into a warm environment with a bed and housed with another Dog who lost his home. We became good friends, I thought I was happy, and when he was adopted, I once again became very sad, crying myself to sleep each night, realizing I was alone. Sure the people here took great care of me, but I was alone in a building with lots of people and animals. I became very depressed and my weight went from 70 lbs to about 50 lbs, all I wanted to do was sit and cry. I gave up all hope of ever finding happiness. I was turned down by other shelters and noone wanted to adopt me because of my size. Given the chance I would show them that I love people and other dogs and want to be by someone's side and play.At 5:01 I saw the door open, I was relieved and very nervous at the same time. One of the shelter workers came in. I am ready to say goodbye to ever being happy again. It is closing time and there are two people I never saw before who are looking at the dogs, are they going to put me out of my pain? I closed my eyes and could smell on them green grass, other dogs, and I heard the man say he was looking for a large Dog. I opened my eyes, are they here to adopt someone, will it be me? All I need to do is get their attention? I reached and stretched as hard as I could to touch them as they went by. The female said I have a pretty face and the male touched my paws. They had gentle hands. THEY ASKED TO MEET ME! Before I knew what was happening, I could hear happiness in ALL of the people who helped me at the shelter as it was announced I was being adopted, ADOPTED RIGHT NOW. There were many tears of joy with the Shelters workers, as my new family took care of my adoption. I have been at my new home for about two weeks, I play constantly with my new owners, their children, and my 3 new brothers, Wrigley, 10 year old lab, Buddy, 6 year old Shepard/Akita, Gizmo, 2 year old Aussie, and me. They all treat me like I was raised with them. My strength is coming back and I put on 5 lbs. During the day I run and play on 3 acres of green fields, plenty of trees and a pond, with my family. At night I sleep on my big puffy bed, near my brothers. I have to smile when I think of the people who took care of me and how I almost lost my life, and at the last minute was saved. I now have tears but now they are tears of joy. I found happiness. Jake |
