ADOPTION at the
INDIANA COUNTY HUMANE SOCIETY

Important Considerations When Selecting Your Pet:

  • Temperament: Take the dog for a "test walk" or bring them to our fenced area. A staff person is happy to assist you. The dog will likely be overly energetic to get out of the kennel. This behavior is not representative of their true personality.

  • Consider the size of the dog and how much space the dog will require in your home.

  • Even if the dog was housebroken upon arrival at the shelter, they will most likely need a refresher course after being in the kennel for any length of time. Please be patient.

  • Puppies require a lot more time and attention than an older dog.

  • Pets must be kept indoors.

  • It is not always easy to determine how the pet will fit into your family until you bring them home. That is why we offer "Trial Adoptions" for those cats and dogs over 1 year of age.  You may foster these animals for 2 weeks (a deposit is required for those residents outside of Indiana County, after which, we ask that you make the decision to formally adopt or return the animal to the shelter so they may have the opportunity to find a permanent adoptive family.

  • Pets must be taken to a veterinarian within 10 days of adoption.

  • If you already have a dog, feel free to bring it to our fenced area to meet the dog you are considering.
